Philanthropy

The true definition of philanthropy is to give without expecting something in return. However, if we do subscribe purely to that definition we do get something in return. We receive a dopamine hit for doing a good deed. Doing something kind and generous for another literally improves brain health. Neuroscientists have coined the term “helpers high” to describe the reaction in our brain when we engage in selfless acts of kindness. A kind act literally creates a cocktail of dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin which reduces stress while boosting happiness and social bonding.
Several years ago I was asked to participate in a focus group for a Board on which I served. One of the questions asked was where did I learn to be philanthropic? The answer was obvious to me, my parents. After that interview I realized I had taken that valuable lesson for granted, the lesson of giving. Some are deprived of that lesson, which to me is sad and tragic.
We are fortunate to live in a highly philanthropic community. There are 621 registered non-profits in our county! A majority of them are robustly supported by the residents of this community. When I was a CASA volunteer they proudly communicated that every child in need of assistance was guaranteed their own advocate! This is impressive and equally unusual, in a good way!
Every time we meet someone new at the restaurant who happens to be exploring the idea of settling here we always assure them that they are making a great decision. This is a unique and wonderful community. Those that dine at the restaurant who inform us that they just moved here are always assured that they landed in a great place! They most likely know this since they chose our community.
We must continue to support the vibrancy of this special place. There are many organization whose funding have been jeopardized so let’s do our part to step up and fill in those gaps! Flood your brain with that “helpers high!”

Unbelievable how Geometry Dash feels easy at first, then suddenly becomes brutally challenging within just a few seconds of gameplay!
